ERA 2000 - Bridge over Kitan strait

The Kitan strait separates Awaji island from Honshu, the largest island of the Japanese archipelago. This construction will create a new union between Honshu and Shikoku, and it will close the Osaka bay along with Akashi kaikyo. This will improve considerably the roadway communications in Kansai area, the second largest metropolitan area of the country.

The distance between Awaji island and Kii peninsula over the Straits is about 11 km, but the intermediate islands shorten the distance to 6 km in the open sea. The widest channel is Yura Seto on the west side of the strait. In this area, they should construct a suspension bridge with minimum span length of 2100 meters with its tower column foundation depth between 60 and 70 meters.

The project includes other two suspension bridges of 450 and 750 meter span respectively in the far eastern part.
