The bridge between Rion and Antirion in Greece is a great historic symbolism of undoubtable importance; it is the second connection between Greece continent and Peloponeso peninsula and expected to contribute developing both regions.
The design of the bridge consists of 4 cable-stayed span of 560 meter long and approximately 42 meters each span, 9 in Rion and 6 in Antirion, total of 2920 meters of longitude. The cross section of the cable-stayed part is mixed; with 2 lateral steel beams with full web and each transversal beams of 4 meter long. The deck is made of concrete of 23 cm height. The total section height is 2.5 meter and the platform width is 25 meters.
The conditions for the foundation are especially delicate due to the poor mechanical characteristics of the ground for the first 20 meter and the earthquake risk of the area. Therefore they used the foundations of 90 meter of diameter and reinforced the ocean bed with metal tubes with 20 meter long and 2 meter of diameter. In total approximately 400 tubes were used for each foundation.
