The Great Bælt strait is located between Funen and Zealand island in Denmark and measures approximately fourteen kilometres. A small island of Sprogø is located in the middle of the Strait. The scheme to carry out this project was to landfill Sprogø island until its surface area became four times larger than the initial, and accomplish the following works:
- The west side: A bridge between Funen and Sprogø island for combined traffic of roadway and railroad.
- The east side: A tunnel for railroad and a bridge for automobiles, both of them between Sprogø and Zealand island.
The construction was not to interfere with intense sea traffic in the strait and was designed to endure severe climatologic conditions including strong winds and even ice block impacts on the bridges. The most significant element of this connection is the suspension bridge of the East side, of which graphical information is included in the figures. Its main span length is 1624, which was the world record at its inauguration in 1998. The great height of the tower became the highest point in Denmark.
