ERA 2000 - Bridge over Messina strait

The Messina strait separates Sicily island from the Italian peninsula. The considerable distance between them and the great sea depth in the strait have prevented to construct a bridge, and the geographical difficulties of the area including high seismic risks discouraged to look for an alternative of a tunnel to create a connection between the island and the peninsula.

However, the recent advances in design and construction bridge materials allows us to do preliminary studies to construct a suspension bridge with a single span, which will finally end the isolation of Sicily.

The proposed final project serve for both railroad and roadway traffic with 3300 meter long span, and is capable of support wind of 216 km/h and earthquake of 7.1 Richter scale. For all these reasons, this will be the most technically ambitious bridge project accomplished until now.
