ERA 2000 - Akashi kaikyo bridge

This is one of the bridges that connect the islands of Honshu and Shikoku in Japanese archipelago. There are three routes for the connections and they consist of numerous bridges of great spans. The seismic danger of the area was demonstrated in Kobe earthquake that took place in 1995. The most significant structural element of the Honshu-Shikoku connecting bridges is located between Kobe and Naruto. It’s a suspension bridge with total length of 3910 meters and with its main span of 1991 meters, which is currently the longest in the world. It was completed in 1998 and supports intense volume of automobile traffic. Because of the extended structural dimensions and difficult meteorological conditions, reduced model testings were done at the equivalent wind velocity of over 250 km/h to verify the bridge performance.
