Structural optimization of aerospace vehicles with emphasis on high-reliability

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and NASA Langley Research Center arranged a workshop attended by most of the accredited industrial and academic professionals in optimum design in Long Beach (USA), in April, 1998. This publication contains two parts: The first part is given by S. Hernandez regarding local and global multi-disciplinary optimization and the second part is given by G. Vanderplaats, about the present situation and the upcoming challenges in the numerical optimization from the theoretical and practical view point, . A fruitful outcome achieved at the workshop is that the participants contributed to identify a series of technological needs that should to be considered. They are included in the Appendix.
