Structural optimization

Practical applications of design optimization

This book is dedicated to design engineers and postgraduate students who are interested in the field of design optimization. The scope is sufficiently ample to cover a range of problems solved by the application of optimization technology, which enables us to solve problems encountered in our daily engineering practice. The method is very straightforward with many figures including several computer applications to solve some of the proposed problems. Throughout the text, current techniques and some software applications are brought together.

Advanced techniques in the optimum design of structures

Seven co-authors of this book describe the best aspects of this field of investigation. Each chapter and its author are as follows: From CAD to CHAOSD: Structural Design and Optimization Techniques (S. Hernández, U. of Coruña), Sensitivity Analysis in Static and Dynamic Problems (S. Kodiyalam, General Electric), Adaptative Finite Element Methods in Computer Aided Engineering (N. Kikuchi y T. Torigaki, U. de Michigan), Entropy-based Optimization Methods for Engineering Design (A.B. Templeman, U. of Liverpool), Mixed Elements in Shape Optimal Design of Structures based on Compliance (R.P.

Structural optimization of aerospace vehicles with emphasis on high-reliability

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and NASA Langley Research Center arranged a workshop attended by most of the accredited industrial and academic professionals in optimum design in Long Beach (USA), in April, 1998. This publication contains two parts: The first part is given by S. Hernandez regarding local and global multi-disciplinary optimization and the second part is given by G. Vanderplaats, about the present situation and the upcoming challenges in the numerical optimization from the theoretical and practical view point, .

Computer aided optimum design of structures VIII

The biennial conference, OPTI2003 was held in Detroit, Michigan (USA) in May 2003 for a group of design optimization engineering specialists. This edition was hosted by the University of Coruña (Spain), the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT) (UK) and the Kettering University (USA).

Computer aided optimum design of structures VII

The objective of the OPTI2001Conference was to exchange ideas and experiences of the advances on optimum engineering design and to show how they could be applied to professional practices. This edition was held in May, 2001 in Bolonia, Italy. The book contains themes such as the optimization of shells, lattice structures and continuous mediums. Moreover, innovation of techniques in numerical optimization is described emphasizing genetic algorithms or disturbance methods. There were a wide range of contributions dedicated to computer codes as well as the general topics.

Computer aided optimum design of structures VI

Design and optimization are two backbones of engineering, and the maturity reached by both technologies allows engineers to approach even more complex problems.

Computer aided optimum design of structures V

This book contains the papers presented at the 5th international conference on Computer Aided Optimum Design of Structure, OPTI 97 held in September, 1997 in Rome (Italy). The works included here show the maturity reached in the field of structural optimization providing abundant practical engineering applications. The applications correspond to complex structures with a great number of elements, therefore the numerical optimization can be used to tackle practical professional problems.

Structural optimization

Continued from the previous editions, the 4th international conference on Computer Aided Design of Structure, OPTI95 was held in Miami (USA) in September, 1995. The works submitted are included in this publication. Several of them deal with multi-objective optimization, which allows a designer to obtain a more balanced solution. Other group of works corresponds to emerging techniques in numerical optimization. Some methods based on the approximated formulation of problems are important for their computational efficiency.

Optimization of structural systems and applications

The 3rd international conference on Computer Aided Optimum Design of Structure, OPTI 93, took place in Zaragoza (Spain) in July, 1993. Most of the presentations are included in this volume including new methods such as simulated annealing, biological growth, and genetic algorithms. Types of analysis considered here are linear and non-linear behaviours and probability regime. With those concepts, the capacity of numerical optimization was proven to be able to deal with complex problems.
